British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of entry passages leading to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," he said. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
