The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
