The Video Platform Grants The Community Power to Reduce AI-Generated Videos in Timelines

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that permits them to reduce the amount of AI-made media appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the platform announced that it currently hosts over 1 bn content made with AI.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is undergoing trials over the next few weeks before a full-scale release. This advancement aligns with a rise in AI content, driven by recent AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

Studies have shown that nearly 10% of the quickest rising video streams on another major platform exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A large amount of this content is classified as low-quality AI content, a term for inferior, factory-style content that is often illogical or dreamlike.

Our research shows that numerous viewers enjoy content created using AI tools, including digital art to science explainers, and we want to give people the option to increase or decrease of that, according to their own choices,” said a platform representative.

AI on the Platform

The platform announced that there are now 1.3bn videos on its service labeled as AI-generated. In total, over 100 million pieces of content are submitted to the service each day, making AI-generated material a minor portion of its complete catalog.

Customizing Your Feed

Users will be able to decrease or raise the amount of AI-generated videos they see by accessing the content preference feature in the application and picking the AI content topic. Other topics that can already be modified under the setting encompass news, style, cosmetics, and dance.

Platform Guidelines

TikTok’s policies require creators to tag “realistic” artificially created content, and it prohibits harmful deepfakes of celebrities or crisis events. Any believable artificial content that is without a tag can be taken down under its user guidelines.

Furthermore, the app will now apply an AI-generated label to content produced via its own AI tools, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for spotting AI-generated material. This measure is aimed to help prevent users from seeking to circumvent the labeling process.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is additionally introducing a $2m AI literacy fund for professionals and organizations to develop learning resources about ethical AI use. This project will assist non-profit groups focused on training computer science.

Moderation Strategy

The platform has justified its moderation strategy, during controversy over proposals to cut jobs for a large number of safety staff in the UK. It is planning to cut hundreds of positions in its content moderation department in its British office, with trade unions and online safety experts voicing alarm that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A trust and safety lead explained that people-led review would remain essential, but AI can safeguard staff by removing the most distressing content before it is viewed by people. TikTok announced a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content reviewed by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to reliance on its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to integrate humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s very important to limit contact with dangerous material as rapidly, which is where a significant AI assistance is making a difference process content quickly.”
